#188: The Magic of Enclosure: Dark Retreats with Meghan Elfsten

#188: The Magic of Enclosure: Dark Retreats with Meghan Elfsten

Dear Rosies,

In a world that never turns the lights off, what happens when you willingly choose complete, uninterrupted dark?

Joining us for today’s Rose Woman conversation is Meghan Elfsten. She is the Director of OMYA Dark Retreats, a California Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), and holds a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology.

Drawing from her own life-changing time in extended darkness, Meghan became deeply devoted to the question: What becomes possible when we remove all external stimulation and finally listen to the body? Dark Retreats create highly supported, trauma-aware containers where participants can safely turn inward, meet long-buried parts of themselves, and access deeper layers of emotional and embodied healing, without plant medicine, performance, or spiritual bypass.

In this episode, we cover these topics and so much more:

  • Enclosure Across Spiritual Traditions

  • A First Dark Retreat

  • Structure Of Dark Retreats

  • The Gray Retreat Option

  • Tomb-To-Womb Reframing by Andrew Holecek

  • Neuroscience Tracking and After Effects

  • Somatic Experiencing Practices

  • Extrasensory Perception And Telepathy Training In Darkness

All the Best,

Christine Marie Mason

P.S. If you feel the pull toward the dark, Meghan is offering 20% off for our listeners at darkcaves.life with the code ROSEWOMAN at checkout.

Frequently asked

What is a dark retreat?
A dark retreat is a stay in complete, uninterrupted darkness, undertaken in a supported and trauma-aware setting. Removing all external stimulation lets the nervous system settle and turns attention inward, toward what the body has been carrying. Traditions across many lineages have used enclosure this way for centuries.
What is a gray retreat?
A gray retreat is a gentler entry point than full darkness, for people drawn to the practice who are not ready for total dark or who would rather begin gradually. It is discussed as an option in this episode alongside the standard structure.
Is a dark retreat safe for everyone?
It should only be done in a supported, trauma-aware container with trained facilitation — Meghan Elfsten is a California Associate Marriage and Family Therapist with a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology. Extended darkness can surface buried material. If you live with a mental-health condition, discuss it with your own clinician before booking.
